Design for Industrialization
Design and prototype a pair of headphones, with focus on injection molded parts.
This was an individual product design project, where we were tasked with designing and prototyping a pair of headphones, which needed to be primarily made of injection molded plastics. The focus was on a combination of manufacturability, aesthetics, and comfort / function.
In this project, I quickly moved from the sketching phase into 3D modelling, and prototyping components.
Most of the challenges in this project were making plastic pieces that worked functionally and wouldn't immediately break, and that were possible to both 3D print (for prototyping) as well as injection mold (as per project requirements). That being said, I am quite happy with how the mechanics of the headphones turned out.
When designing for injection molding, it is important to have even thickness throughout a part, make sure that draft angles are taken into consideration, and avoid having undercuts and other complex features.
